Washington DC Family Trip –

Know before you go.

A trip to Washington DC with the kids had been on my mind for a long time.  I wanted to wait until we could walk all day without a stroller and were learning a little American History in school.  My kids were 7-12 and it felt just right.  Older would have been lovely too.  Planning was DAUNTING as there is so much info and so much to see and do.  After much research, this is my golden ticket below.  

*Worth noting – we started in Philly and saw the Liberty Bell, the first printing press, where all the founding fathers met and signed. ran up the steps just like Rocky then took the Acela train (think Brightline) to DC.  If you have the extra days its a great add on.

Where to sleep in DC:

We adored the Hay Adams.  Special turn down service for kids, immaculate beautiful rooms, impeccable service, and an ideal location for jumping off each day.  Lots of movers and shakers stay here so you never know who you may meet.  

What to do in DC:

Day 1:

White House Tour – request a minimum of 21 days in advance and no more than 90 days in advance of the requested date.
Museum of Natural History just walk in no tickets or reservations needed.
Dinner at Old Ebbet Grill – lots of history and very yummy. 12 min from hotel close to white house. Make open table reservation
Guided private night tour of the monuments pickup from Old Ebbet and end at Hotel. Recommend something easy to see out of, some vans are hard to see. Wear walking shoes – you will get your steps in!

Day 2:

Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum – reserve timed tickets online
Founding Farmers DC — Foggy Bottom for lunch  3 blocks from white house, make open table reservation
Capitol Tour make this reservation through Lois Frankel (east wing is nicer)
The mall walk to vietnam memorial and botanical gardens (all free and walks from the Capitol Tour)
Washington Monument can book reservations 30 days out or day before at 10am
Dinner – The Hamilton make reservations

Day 3:

Spy Museum loads of fun (I would say for ages 7 and up).  Get tickets in advance.
Lunch at the Wharf restaurants easy walk from Spy Museum, lots of options
Library of Congress request tour time online
Dinner – MXDC by Todd English.  Mexican food.  Reservations strongly suggested.

Day 4:

Mount Vernon – George Washingtons Home. Lots of history and room to run! You can have lunch here too.

Then to the airport!
