Where you grew up:
Boca Raton, FL
Where you live now:
Delray Beach, FL
Why you love living there:
When I met my husband, he was already living in East Delray. We fell in love with the lifestyle here and haven’t left since. It’s a beach town, which is my absolute favorite part. Health and wellness is a big aspect of East Delray as well; people are always outside walking, biking, or running, and most things are only a golf cart’s distance away. Everyone knows about Atlantic Avenue, but my favorite restaurants and shops are just off the Ave. We have an awesome Green Market on the weekends in season, and a nice little art scene here too. What’s not to love?!
Tell me about your kids:
Kai is our daughter, she’s 9 and Dylan is our son, he’s 7. They go to school in the neighborhood and a lot of their friends live nearby which is really fun for us all. They are soccer fanatics (which they get from their dad) and they love to sing and dance (which clearly they get from me 😉
Favorite things to do with the kids locally:
We are a pretty close family so we spend a lot of time together. Friday nights at the beach is our favorite activity for sure! Weekends are typically filled up with kids sports right now, so we are often at the soccer field, but our favorite thing to do is find cool places to be outdoors, whether it’s a nature trail or driving a little north to go kayaking or canoeing.
What’s your ‘day job’? How did you get started with it?
I founded The Montana Method fitness studio almost three years ago, so I am there teaching classes most days, which I love. It honestly doesn’t feel like work. Before class, I try to connect with our community and get ready for this workout that lifts me up physically, mentally, and emotionally. Once I turn my playlist on, it’s game time and we are all in it together, whether you’re in the studio, joining via livestream, or our new format—Video on Demand!
I’ve always loved movement and I found my niche teaching Pilates and barre over 10 years ago. Then I started The Montana Method in my garage when my son was about 6 months old because I was a mom of a toddler and a baby and really craved community and movement. I felt like there was something missing from my life, so I created it. I had no idea this is where we would be nearly seven years later (and even through a pandemic!)
When I’m not teaching, I am working on the business side of The Montana Method, because we have grown so much! I have an amazing team of instructors and staff that I really couldn’t do this without. I still have people in my classes at the studio that started with me in my garage, which still blows my mind and I am truly so grateful.
What is your best parenting advice. Lay it on us.
Make your kids feel seen and heard. It can be challenging when life moves so fast and we are distracted with so many things around us, but I try. I like to connect with my kids by doing activities we all enjoy together, not just “kid stuff.” I know I can’t get out of going to Boomers all the time, but I always like to suggest a bike ride, swim, or doing art projects so I can get on their level and still enjoy our time together.
What do you do for self care?
I’m a big believer in self care. It doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming, but finding what brings you back to your center is key for me. If you follow me on Instagram, you know I love my cold plunge because I get to connect with my breath and have that alone time for a few minutes. I don’t really sit in a meditation right now; I find it hard to sit still, which is something I’m working on. I really enjoy anything in nature as self care, like a dip in the ocean or going for walks. I have great friends in my life, so making time to connect with them is part of my self care. And of course, I love a good foot massage and sushi for a date night.
Karaoke – what are you singing?
I sing every day in class, and I am the first to admit I have a terrible voice. But music is such a big part of my life and my work. A song can bring you back to a memory in your life, or change your mood without your even realizing it. There are too many songs to name, but a fun fact is I love to rap…join us, you’ll see!
Anything else you want to share?
Being a mom is the hardest job in the world. Honestly. It’s rewarding on so many levels, but it can also feel defeating at times. I believe parenting goes in seasons. Sometimes we feel like we really got it down, and other times I wonder what the heck I am doing wrong. Give yourself grace and compassion just like you would to anyone else. The biggest thing I am trying to teach myself is that you can’t be everything to everyone AND yourself. You have to prioritize yourself so you can be the best version of YOU to the people you care about most. Coming from someone who can definitely be a people pleaser, it takes a lot of practice and I have to be reminded of it often. Success doesn’t look like how much you can accomplish in a day: success is finding peace in your day. It feels different; you’ll know when you are doing it. Being able to offer classes to busy moms in the studio, via livestream, and now on demand is important to me—make some time for yourself, wherever you can find it!
