What is your mission?
Humane education is teaching people of all ages to respect all life on the planet and feel empowered to take action and help make the world a better place.
Peggy Adams Humane Education Department believes that people, animals and the environment are all connected.
Through humane education programs, together, we can all make a lifetime of good choices in our treatment of all living things and the world we share.
As an institution:Â Â The Mission of the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League of the Palm Beaches, Incorporated is to provide shelter to lost, homeless and unwanted animals, to provide spay and neuter and other medical services for companion animals, and to care for, protect, and find quality homes for homeless and neglected companion animals, to advocate animal welfare, community involvement and education to further the bond between people and animals.
Our Vision is to create a community where 100% of the adoptable animals find loving homes and no animals will be euthanized because of pet overpopulation.
How and when did you get started?
The Education Department at Peggy Adams officially began April 1 2020, with the prime objective of building an education department.
Shellie Kalmore (me), the new Humane Education Manager came to work on that day, met with HR filled out paperwork, attended a brief meeting , then was given a laptop and sent home to build this brand new department in the midst of a pandemic basically from her living room.
Now, I consider myself beyond fortunate and I say my gratitudes every day, that throughout this whole craziness of the world turning upside down, I was employed!!
So I got to work.  My background is in informal education. I’ve been director of education for zoos and other informal learning environments, and spent my career looking after the development of educational strategies, programs and innovative experiences, providing people of all ages, opportunities to celebrate and connect with the natural world.
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League came from some humble beginnings . In 1924, a group of eight prominent ladies met on the porch of a home in Palm Beach to decide what to do about the ongoing problem of animals left behind by winter visitors returning north. From that informal meeting emerged a league of concerned and dedicated people helping animals, that today has positively impacted so many animal lives.
Who do you help?
Today, this long-standing organization offers dozens of services to support our life-saving mission.
From Adoption, Medical, Behavior & Training Services to the newly developed Education Department, Peggy Adams is fully engaged in saving lives and building a more humane community–together.
Are there volunteer opportunities? Any where children can be helpful/involved?
