Halloween is a time for costumes, fun, and of course, candy! We know it’s not the easiest time to focus on healthy snacks, but your friends at Pediatric Dentistry in the Gardens, want to help your kids enjoy their treats while keeping their teeth safe.
Not All Candy Is Created Equal
If you’re deciding between different kinds of candy, one tip is to opt for chocolate over sticky candies. Why? Chocolate dissolves more quickly in the mouth and doesn’t stick to teeth the way gummy candies, caramels, and taffy do. When candy sticks to teeth, it creates the perfect environment for cavities to form. By choosing treats that don’t linger as long, like chocolate, you reduce the amount of time sugar is in contact with their teeth.
Of course, all sweets should be enjoyed in moderation, and a good brushing and flossing routine after indulging can go a long way toward preventing cavities!
What to Do with All That Extra Candy?
After Halloween night, it can feel overwhelming to manage the large haul of candy your kids collect. Luckily, there are creative ways to cut back on candy consumption without taking away the fun!
• The Switch Witch: The Switch Witch is a fun tradition where kids can trade in some of their Halloween candy for a special toy or prize. They leave their candy out at night, and the “Switch Witch” comes and swaps it for a non-candy surprise. This is a great way to let kids enjoy some of their treats but not overindulge.
• Donate those sweets: Many organizations accept candy donations to send to troops overseas. This is a great way to brighten the day of our service members while also reducing the temptation to eat too much candy at home. Your kids can feel good knowing their candy is going to a good cause! Other options are the Candy buy back, your local Ronald McDonald House (find yours here) or Operation Shoe box is ready to receive your candy donations — they distribute candy on Halloween, Christmas and Easter to troops that are missing the festivities while away from home regardless of where they are stationed. Any candy donations can be sent to Operation Shoebox at: 8360 East Highway 25, Belleview, FL 34420. Other options for candy donation include calling your local food pantry, homeless shelter or nursing home to see if they accept Halloween candy.
The Bottom Line
Halloween is about fun, and that includes treats! By making smart choices like choosing chocolate over sticky candies, practicing good oral hygiene, and finding creative ways to manage candy intake, you can enjoy the holiday without worrying about your child’s dental health.
Don’t forget: after the Halloween fun is over, make sure everyone brushes and flosses their teeth to keep those smiles bright and healthy! If you have any questions let us know.
