DESCRIPTION:History Fort Lauderdale\, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors\, will honor The Miller Family of Miller Construction Company during its 28th annual History Makers fundraiser set for Thursday\, February 6\, from 6 – 8 p.m. This yearly special event\, taking place at Galleria Fort Lauderdale (2414 East Sunrise Blvd.)\, recognizes individuals and companies who have made significant contributions to the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale. \nFlorida natives Thomas J. Miller and Harley W. Miller established Miller Construction Company in 1973. Since then\, through a combination of determination\, commitment\, progressive foresight and creative planning\, Miller Construction has completed more than 600 impactful commercial projects for the private sector in Florida\, including office buildings\, industrial\, manufacturing & distribution hubs\, automotive\, retail\, healthcare\, higher education\, and hospitality that bolstered South Florida’s economic prosperity. Their impactful projects of note include the construction of Lago Mar Hotel & Club\, multiple projects for Holy Cross Hospital over three decades\, the design-build of Airbus Flight Simulator Training Facility\, KOS Pharmaceuticals manufacturing and testing facility\, and building two of the nation’s first fully digital TV facilities – WTVJ NBC 6 and WPLG Local10. In 1992\, they were a vital part of the rebirth of and revitalization of Las Olas Blvd with the construction of the award-wining 888 Las Olas Building and expansion of the historic Riverside Hotel and parking garage. A long-standing relationship with South Florida’s top-selling furniture retailer City Furniture led to working on retail showroom construction and renovations from South Miami through Vero Beach\, and in Naples and Fort Myers. In 2013\, Miller Construction completed Nova Southeastern University’s Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Ecosystems Research $200 million facility\, the nation’s only research facility dedicated to coral reef ecosystems. The following year\, the company completed the massive $50 million\, multiphase renovation of the world-class Broward Center for the Performing Arts\, a milestone for Fort Lauderdale’s cultural future. Recently\, Miller Construction completed an innovative\, six-level automated drystack F3 Marina in Fort Lauderdale’s 17th Street Causeway marine district for owner Founders 3. The nation’s second fully automated drystack marina of its kind\, F3 Marina features an automated crane that lifts and stores or retrieves boats as long as 46 feet in under five minutes – a breakthrough for the marine industry \nSince its founding\, Miller Construction Company and its founders have also sought to make a positive\, long-lasting difference in the communities they serve. DESCRIPTION:The River Center continues to collaborate with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary “Flotilla 52” to provide a series of Boating Safely Classes targeted specifically to young boaters in our community. These classes are provided through a generous sponsorship by the AustinBlu Foundation\, a not-for-profit dedicated to raising awareness and promoting educational programs to improve boater safety. \nThere is no cost for this class\, however there is a deposit required to reserve a seat. The deposit of $10 will be refunded in full to all students who complete the class. \nRecommended for children 12 years and up\, but all ages are welcome.

Strauss’ Don Juan. Led by SFSO’s award-winning music director Sebrina María Alfonso and featuring soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra\, the concert will take place on Wednesday\, February 12\, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. A pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason will take place 30 minutes before the show featuring in-depth conversation and insights about the work and composer. \nDon Juan is a swashbuckling escapade that both scandalized and delighted audiences with its eroticism and ultra-modern style when it premiered in 1889\, cementing Richard Strauss’ (1864-1949) fame as the genius of his generation\, making him a favorite among musical modernists. Meanwhile\, his Four Last Songs\, a SFSO premiere featuring soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra\, is a touchingly beautiful and serene masterpiece\, bidding farewell to an illustrious career. \nTop Prize Winner of the 2018 Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition Wagner Division\, soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra has garnered major attention for her work on the operatic and concert stage. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2005 as a soloist in Brahms’ Requiem with The Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of the late James DePreist\, her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2014 as “First Lady” in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte\, singing all nine performances of the opera\, three of which were Sirius XM Satellite Broadcasts and David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center debut as a soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with the National Chorale. In 2018\, she made her debut with the Orquesta Filarmónica del Estado de Chihuahua in Mexico in a solo concert of arias from Il Trovatore\, Nabucco\, Tannhäuser\, and Turandot. Ms. Shoremount-Obra made her European Operatic debut in 2004 as “Ifigenia” in Handel’s Oreste at the Spoleto Festival\, Italy. She has performed numerous operatic roles with a variety of operas and performance groups including Opera Grand Rapids\, The American Symphony Orchestra\, the LA Philharmonic\, Grand Harmonie in Princeton\, NJ\, Odyssey Opera of Boston\, Maryland Opera in Baltimore\, New York Philharmonic and more. A champion of new music\, Shoremount-Obra has premiered/collaborated with some of today’s most popular and notable composers including Tarik O’Regan\, Dan Visconti\, John Zorn\, and Paola Prestini. She is a 2004 New York Regional Winner and National Semi-Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She has also won numerous awards from other organizations\, including the Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation and has since been supported with supplemental grants from the same foundation. She is the 2016 winner of the Ursula Springer Award from the Wagner Society of New York and together with pianist Christopher Cooley\, the 2019 Second Prize Winner in the Joy In Singing International Art Song Competition. \nThe program also features SFSO’s premiere of Austrian composer Johann Strauss II’s (1825-1899) The Blue Danube\, the world’s most famous waltz. Originally written as a choral piece for the Vienna Men’s Choral Association\, Strauss adapted it for orchestra soon after it debuted. Epitomizing the symphonic richness and variety of Strauss’s dance music\, it ultimately earned him acclaim as the “waltz king\,” and has become the best-known of his many dance pieces. \nSFSO’s premiere of Hector Berlioz’s (1803-1869) tumultuous “King Lear Overture” (Le roi Lear)\, perhaps his grandest\, most dramatic and atmospheric overture\, recounts the dark Shakespearean tragedy of man and a kingdom divided by love and politics. \nNow in its 27th season celebrating Icons & Rebels\, SFSO invites audiences to tantalizing upcoming works by Mozart\, Berlioz\, Prokofiev and Bruckner. \nFrom sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores\, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. DESCRIPTION:In honor of Black History Month\, History Fort Lauderdale proudly announces the grand opening of “Roots of Resilience: The Journey of Black Broward\,” a new permanent exhibition\, on February 19. This significant exhibit\, developed in collaboration with esteemed local organizations including the African American Research Library and Cultural Center\, Broward Main Library Historic Archives\, American Legion Post 220\, Northwest Federated Woman’s Club\, Links Inc.\, Broward County’s Black fraternities and sororities and Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor & Restaurant\, explores the rich history and enduring impact of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County’s Black community from 1793 to the present day. A ribbon cutting is set for 11 a.m. with representatives from collaborating organizations and city and county officials in attendance. \nThe exhibition features a collection of artifacts\, historic photographs\, and oral histories from African American residents and ancestors highlighting challenges\, triumphs\, and heroes. From slavery through Jim Crow laws\, desegregation\, and the civil rights era through the present day\, visitors will learn about Black residents’ unique stories of oppression to freedom and how their invaluable contributions shaped our region’s cultural\, social and political fabric. \nSupport for History Fort Lauderdale’s “Roots of Resilience: The Journey of Black Broward” has been provided by the Community Impact Fund at the Community Foundation of Broward. Additional funding has been provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)\, NextEra Energy Foundation\, Florida Power & Light Company’s charitable arm\, Jacarlene Foundation\, the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward County Cultural Council and Visit Lauderdale. \nAdding to the Black History Monthlong celebration will be Dillard Center for the Arts’ annual art show and sale\, curated by Dillard instructor Celestin Joseph. This annual showcase features the creative reimaginings and reflections of historical Black leaders\, community icons\, and hometown heroes through photography and studio art by the school’s Advanced Placement (AP) students. \nHistory Fort Lauderdale hosts a variety of engaging multicultural experiences\, year-round. It seeks to bring awareness to the community through both traveling exhibits and multiple permanent exhibits including “Women Trailblazers\,” “Fort Lauderdale – the Early Years\,” “Fashion & Musical Theatre\,” “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts: the story of boatbuilding along the New River\,” Seminole Arts & Culture\,” “New River Archaeology\,” and “Take PRIDE\, a retrospective on LGBTQ life in South Florida.” \nHistory Fort Lauderdale is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. with docent guided tours\, daily\, at 1\, 2 and 3 p.m. Group walking tours are available upon special request. Admission is $15 for adults; $12 for seniors and $7 for students (through age 22 with a valid student ID). Admission is free for members\, military\, and children ages six and under.
