SUMMARY:Science Movie Series: Apollo 13 Film Screening and QandA
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, February 16\, join Glazer Hall and Cox Science Center and Aquarium for a screening of this iconic film- based on the events of the Apollo 13 lunar mission\, which took place more than 55 years ago. Astronauts Jim Lovell (Tom Hanks)\, Fred Haise (Bill Paxton) and Jack Swigert (Kevin Bacon) find everything going according to plan after leaving Earth’s orbit when an oxygen tank explodes\, and the scheduled moon landing is called off. Director Ron Howard emphasized scientific accuracy for Apollo 13 by going to great lengths to recreate realistic conditions\, working with NASA to build the set and train the cast in astronaut and flight controller duties. \nThe screening will be followed by a Q&A with Nicole Cummings\, R10 NASA Program Manager. \nDesigned for audiences of all ages\, the series invites guests to explore\, imagine and be inspired by the discoveries shaping our world and the possibilities of tomorrow. From space exploration and artificial intelligence to ocean conservation\, each screening offers an immersive experience that combines storytelling\, science and conversation. \nThe series builds toward a special Earth Day celebration on April 22\, featuring the North American premiere of National Geographic’s “Ocean\,” narrated by Sir David Attenborough and accompanied by a live orchestral and operatic performance by the Palm Beach Symphony and singers from the Palm Beach Opera. With stunning cinematography and live musical accompaniment\, the screening offers a breathtaking journey through coral reefs\, kelp forests and the open sea while underscoring the vital role of healthy oceans in sustaining life on Earth. \nFor tickets and additional information\, visit https://glazerhall.org/event-category/science-films/.

SUMMARY:Free Heart Screening Event for Youth in West Palm Beach in Honor of American Heart Month
DESCRIPTION:One in 300 youth has a detectable heart condition\, and 80% of youth have no symptoms prior to a sudden cardiac arrest. In honor of American Heart Month\, GOLDLAW is teaming up with Who We Play For to host a free heart screening event for children and young adults ages 10 to 25 at the Westgate Parks and Recreation Center in West Palm Beach on Saturday\, Feb. 21\, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The community event aims to screen hundreds of young people and emphasizes that “anyone can save a life” through education and awareness. Craig M. Goldenfarb\, Esq.\, CEO and founder of GOLDLAW and Stacy Cartechine\, a heart screening director from Who We Play For\, will be in attendance to educate and engage with attendees. \nWho We Play For is a nonprofit dedicated to eliminating preventable sudden cardiac death in the young through providing affordable heart screenings and advocacy. The organization received a grant from the Florida Department of Health\, which allows the event to be free for the local community. \nDuring the event\, team members from Who We Play For will be on site to administer electrocardiogram (ECG) screenings\, which take approximately five minutes each. Paramedics from Palm Beach County Fire Rescue will educate families on CPR and AEDs and will bring trucks to demonstrate how EKG equipment is used. The event will also feature CPR/AED trainers from Every Second Counts CPR. Pre-registration is encouraged. Consent forms will be available for walk-ins. \nThis event is part of GOLDLAW’s commitment to support the local community through ongoing initiatives. GOLDLAW will also donate an AED for a raffle. \nAttendees will enjoy free sweet treats from GOLDLAW’s Sweet Justice Ice Cream Truck. The Sweet Justice ice cream truck is a symbol of GOLDLAW’s commitment to giving back to the community it has proudly served for over 20 years. Serving those who serve the community\, the Sweet Justice truck delivers an assortment of free ice cream to South Florida residents and heroes from Palm Beach County up the Treasure Coast to the Port St. Lucie area. \nIn 2025\, Craig Goldenfarb donated a lifesaving AED to the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society\, and GOLDLAW donated 1\,700 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to local families. \n“Heart health screenings can be the difference between life and death for young people. GOLDLAW is happy to continue to support our local community by teaming up with Who We Play For and bringing together our community partners to provide free screenings and educate families on how to save lives. Anyone can be a hero when they know CPR and how to use an AED. This event during American Heart Month is about protecting our youth and empowering our community with life-saving knowledge\,” said Craig M. Goldenfarb\, Esq.\, CEO and founder of GOLDLAW. \n“Since losing my son Alex to Sudden Cardiac Arrest at 21 years old\, I know how critical it is to get your child an ECG heart screening whether they play a sport or not. My son did not play sports\, but he died from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. ALL youth need to have an electrocardiogram. The stethoscope alone is not enough and misses about 90% of potentially deadly heart conditions\,” said Stacy Cartechine\, WWPF Heart Screening Director & Mother of Sudden Cardiac Death victim. \n“When my 16-year-old daughter Lexi survived sudden cardiac arrest in 2016\, we were given a gift. 23\,000 American kids per year experience SCA. My kid got to live because she was in the right place at the right time. A gift that 90% of victims don’t get. They die. The new law requiring ECGs is about the prevention of a cardiac event\, not having to be lucky enough to go down in a right place-right time environment. The SCA survival rate has not changed in 30 years – just 10%! The Second Chance Act is more than a law – it’s hope in action\, and we are proud to be a part of it\,” said Shawn Sima\, WWPF Impact Director & Father of SCA Survivor. \nThe event is made possible through the generous support of Palm Beach County Parks and Recreation\, which will donate the use of the facility\, as well as Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and Every Second Counts CPR\, which will donate their time to help teach CPR.

SUMMARY:South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Joachim\, Simon\, Mozart and Rimsky-Korsakov at Tennessee Williams Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Timeless classics meet bold new voices as South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO)\, led by award-winning music director and multi-generational Key West Conch native Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso\, celebrates Black History Month with a standout program. SFSO will present the anticipated Florida premiere of GRAMMY® nominee Nathalie Joachim’s Had to Be\, an intimate exploration of memory and identity\, performed by rising cellist Seth Parker Woods and the orchestral premiere of Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances\, a vibrant work filled with spiritual depth. Completing the program\, Mozart’s “Haffner” symphony bursts with celebratory energy and elegant precision\, while Rimsky-Korsakov’s crowd-pleasing Capriccio espagnol sparkles with irresistible Spanish rhythms on Saturday\, February 21\, at 7:30 p.m.\, at the Tennessee Williams Theatre at The College of the Florida Keys (5901 College Road).\nHaitian American composer Nathalie Joachim’s Had To Be draws on Black Dandyism – a cultural movement blending European and Black American male fashion to convey style\, status\, and identity – as well as broader African diasporic influences\, including Caribbean musical traditions and New Orleans second line celebrations. The three-movement concerto was written for three-time GRAMMY-nominated cellist Seth Parker Woods\, described by The Guardian as “a cellist of power and grace” with “mature artistry and willingness to go to the brink.” \nHad to Be is positive\, prideful\, and radical all at once. It represents the perpetually colorful and complex intersections between race\, class\, gender\, power\, and style. It honors what it means to be Black and continuously choosing to be free. By coincidence\, or perhaps to no surprise\, Woods has topped the Best Dressed Lists in Variety\, Texas Monthly\, and OC Register. \nCellist Seth Parker Woods is a versatile artist and advocate for contemporary music\, having premiered numerous concertos written for him\, including works by Tyshawn Sorey\, Julia Adolphe\, and Rebecca Saunders\, in addition to Nathalie Joachim’s Had To Be. His GRAMMY-nominated\, autobiographical work Difficult Grace has been performed to critical acclaim at major venues including 92NY\, CAP UCLA\, and the San Diego Symphony. Woods has appeared at Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, and Konzerthaus Dortmund\, among others. Since 2022\, he has served on the faculty of USC Thornton School of Music and was appointed Robert Mann Chair in Strings and Chamber Music in 2024. He has also held residencies with the Kaufman Music Center and Seattle Symphony and received the 2022 Chamber Music America Michael Jaffee Visionary Award. \nSFSO is also proud to present its orchestral premiere of Four Black American Dances from GRAMMY-nominated African American composer\, Carlos Simon\, the composer-in-residence for the John F. Kennedy Center. \nAdding to the varied program\, SFSO will perform Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 “Haffner\,” a four-movement vibrant\, celebratory symphony written in 1782\, to honor Mozart’s friend\, Sigmund Haffner\, and his rise to nobility in Salzberg. \nConcluding the evening is the crowd-pleasing Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol\, based on Spanish folk songs and dances\, and filled with vibrant rhythms that whisk audiences off to exotic\, far-off places of the imagination. \nSFSO’s 28th season of “Juxtapositions” explores beauty in contrasts\, where the bold and the sublime intersect\, and timeless masterpieces share the stage with today’s most compelling and celebrated musical voices. This season’s performances burst with color and power from the sun-drenches skies of Mendelssohn’s “Italian” to Sibelius’ soul-searching Violin Concerto to Beethoven’s luminous Piano Concerto No. 4 and Dvořák’s Bohemian Eighth. \nSFSO’s Florida Keys Masterworks season of Juxtapositions runs from January through March 2026 at the Tennessee Williams Theatre in Key West. The first concert took place in January\, with two remaining in the series. \nTickets are on sale now beginning at $35 (plus ticketing fees) and two concert subscription packages are still available from $59.50. Subscribers receive a 15% discount off single ticket prices. Tickets may be purchased by visiting southfloridasymphony.org\, or keystix.com or by calling (305) 295-7676. \nFor additional information\, visit southfloridasymphony.org\, call (954) 522-8445 or email\ninfo@southfloridasymphony.org.
