SUMMARY:Hatchling Discovery
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n$24\nAdults\n\n\n$24\nYouths Ages 10-17\n\n\n\nAfter an introduction to the sea turtle nesting and hatching process\, guests may have the opportunity to witness a live nest excavation and create their own data sheets to take home as a memento.\n\n\n1.5 Hours \nWith permission from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission\, a permitted Team Member will lead guests down onto Juno beach to discuss the nesting and hatching processes of sea turtles. If a nest is located\, guests will witness our trained Team excavate a sea turtle nest. \nWhat happens if there are no nests to excavate on the day of my program?\nWe cannot control the timing and location of when nests hatch out. If there is no nest that needs excavating on the day of your program\, all guests will enjoy a beach ecology talk to learn about the nesting and hatchling processes of sea turtles. \nWhat are my chances to witness an excavation or see live hatchlings?\nThere is no way to predict if there will be a nest that is ready to excavate on any given day. Each program begins with a brief beach walk and ecology talk that will educate guests on sea turtle crawl identification\, nesting and hatchling processes\, and the research projects currently underway at LMC. Although hatchlings are often found in nests during excavations\, if you do get to witness an excavation\, there is no guarantee that a hatchling will be found. We’re just happy they all made it out to sea\, naturally! \nHow does the program work?\nHatching is highest for loggerhead sea turtles in August and September. During these months\, we offer this program to the public under a required permit issued by the state of Florida. Once registered for a program\, guests come to the center to check in and are led down to the beach to enjoy the program. \nWhy do you excavate these nests?\nLoggerhead Marinelife Center holds special permits that allow us to collect data from sea turtle nests\, such as number of hatched and unhatched eggs. This data helps scientists understand how successful sea turtle reproduction is on local beaches and inform management decisions that affect sea turtle conservation. \nHave these nests already hatched before they are excavated?\nLMC monitors each marked nest along Juno Beach\, Jupiter and Tequesta beaches for signs of natural hatchling activity. Before collecting data from any sea turtle nest\, LMC waits 3 days after the first signs of natural activity to collect data. This window of time gives sea turtle hatchlings the time they need to emerge undisturbed by data collection activities. \nCan I take pictures?\nYes\, you are welcome to take pictures of your experience with us! \nWhat to Wear\n\nThe program is held entirely outdoors. We suggest you pre-apply sunscreen and bug spray prior to your arrival to campus to ensure a timely start to the program. Comfortable walking shoes are strongly suggested\, as we will be walking in soft\, loose sand. If an excavation is held during your program\, you will be sitting and observing for 30-45 minutes in the direct sun\, so hats are strongly recommended for additional sun protection.\nWhat if it’s raining? We run our program rain or shine and only stay off the beach in the event of lightning. Though we cannot offer refunds\, all ticket sales directly benefit Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s mission and the care of our sea turtle patients.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Hatchling Release
DESCRIPTION:The Hatchling Release program at Loggerhead Marinelife Center is a unique experience that allows our visitors to learn about sea turtles and their hatching process. \nDuration\n2 Hours \nAbout\nThe program begins with an educational lesson about sea turtles and their nesting behavior and concludes with a walk to Juno Beach to view hatchlings being released by LMC staff. \nWill we see a nest hatch?\nWe cannot predict when nests will hatch. We will be releasing hatchlings that have recently hatched and been excavated by our research staff. \nHow does the program work?\nThe Hatchling Release program begins with an informative presentation about sea turtles and hatchlings. The evening concludes with a trip to the beach to view hatchlings being released to the ocean. \nAre we guaranteed to see hatchlings being released?\nThe hatchlings we are releasing come from nests excavated earlier in the day by our research team. The number of nests being excavated\, species of the nests and number of hatchlings found in the nest varies by day\, so we cannot guarantee hatchlings every single night. Though we cannot offer refunds\, all ticket sales directly benefit Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s mission and the care of our sea turtle patients. \nWill we get to touch a sea turtle?\nNo\, only staff on our permit are allowed to touch the sea turtle hatchlings. \nCan I bring a flashlight?\nSorry\, flashlights are not permitted. \nCan I take pictures?\nWe do not permit photography of any form throughout the program. \nMore Info\n\nChildren must be 10 years or older to attend a hatchling release\, and all participants must be able to walk up to half a mile on the beach.\nWe run our program rain or shine and only stay off the beach in the event of lightning. During this waiting period\, guests will be onsite enjoying their presentation. We do not cancel the program due to inclement weather. If the forecast calls for rain\, we recommend guests wear raincoats or ponchos. There are no refunds on tickets.\n\nWhat to Wear\n\nDark clothing is preferred to minimize the impact on nesting sea turtles. Bug spray and comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.\nWhat if it’s raining? We run our program rain or shine and only stay off the beach in the event of lightning. SUMMARY:Guided Turtle Walk
DESCRIPTION:Turtle Walks are a unique program that allows our visitors to learn about and observe the nesting and egg-laying process of loggerhead sea turtles. \nDuration\n\nApproximately 3 Hours\nThere’s no way to know the exact duration of the program from night to night\, although the program is officially scheduled from 9pm – 12am. The length of the program depends on when we spot a loggerhead sea turtle and her behavior. If we do spot one\, it could be at any point in the evening. If no turtle has been spotted by midnight\, the program concludes.\n\nAbout\nWith the approval of state issued permits\, experienced Loggerhead Marinelife Center scouts will patrol our designated section of Juno Beach searching for sea turtles while visitors enjoy an informative presentation on the plight of sea turtles and engage in a variety of hands-on learning experiences. Once a loggerhead sea turtle emerges and begins her egg-laying process\, the group is then led down to the beach to witness this unforgettable experience. \nWhat happens if I don’t see a sea turtle?\nWe cannot guarantee that a loggerhead sea turtle will carry out her nesting process on the evening of your scheduled program. Though we cannot offer refunds\, all ticket sales directly benefit Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s mission and the care of our sea turtle patients. \nWhat are my chances to see a turtle?\nThere is absolutely NO way to predict the successful nesting of a sea turtle on the night of your scheduled walk. Sea turtles never RSVP\, and we have no way of knowing what the likelihood of seeing a sea turtle will be from night to night. Juno Beach\, however\, is one of the densest nesting sites for loggerhead sea turtles in the world. \nHow does the program work?\nNesting is highest for loggerhead sea turtles in June and July. During these months\, we offer turtle walks to the public Tuesday-Saturday under a required permit issued by the state of Florida. Once registered for an evening\, visitors come to the center and receive a presentation\, at which time our scouts are on the beach in search of activity. If the scouts spot a loggerhead sea turtle carrying out her nesting process\, they will radio to bring the group down to watch. \nHow long is the program?\nThere’s no way to know the exact duration of the program from night to night\, although the program is officially scheduled from 9pm – 12am. The length of the program depends entirely on when and if we spot a sea turtle. If we do spot one\, it could be at any point in the evening. If no turtle has been spotted by midnight\, the program concludes. \nCan I bring a flashlight?\nSorry\, flashlights are not permitted. \nCan I take pictures?\nWe do not permit photography of any form throughout the program. \nMore Info\n\nChildren must be 10 years or older to attend the walks\, and all participants must be able to walk up to half a mile on the beach.\nDue to our State issued permit requirements\, we can only accommodate a small number of people per night and dates fill up quickly. There is no relationship between sea turtle nesting activity and the phase of the moon\, the weather\, or the tides. All scheduled Turtle Walk nights have the same odds of the group seeing a sea turtle nesting. There are no refunds on tickets if a sea turtle is not spotted.\n\nWhat to Wear\n\nDark clothing is preferred to minimize the impact on nesting sea turtles. Bug spray and comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.\nWhat if it’s raining? We run our program rain or shine and only stay off the beach in the event of lightning. During this waiting period\, guests will be onsite enjoying our presentation. We do not cancel the program due to inclement weather. If the forecast calls for rain\, we recommend guests wear raincoats or ponchos. No umbrellas please.
