DESCRIPTION:History Fort Lauderdale\, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors\, will celebrate the opening of its newest exhibit\, “The Growth and History of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office” with a special public preview\, free opening reception and book signing on Tuesday\, October 14\, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. This engaging exhibition takes a closer look at the department’s progress over the years\, from 1915 to the present\, while also highlighting the sometimes-scandalous history that has shaped its story. The exhibit features images and narratives from the department’s origins to the prohibition era\, organized crime\, gambling and outlaws\, to mid-century racial tensions and finally\, the expansion\, modernization\, and professionalism of today. \nAs part of the festivities\, guests are invited to participate in a “Florida Scribes & Stories” free book signing and meet & greet with retired decorated BSO Deputy Sheriff Joe Williams\, author of Unearthed. Williams is also a major contributor of artifacts and photographs to the new exhibit. \nA complement to the exhibit\, Unearthed captures the dark history of Broward County in the 1940s. A tough-as-nails sheriff who did things his way. The New York mobster Meyer Lansky who profited from his friendship with the sheriff’s department. It is a story of a young cop hired to enforce the Florida gambling laws\, ultimately leading to his untimely death. A 75-year-old story of his tragic death from a car accident … or was it? \nDrinks and light bites will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Join the Schoolhouse Children’s Museum on Wednesday\, October 15\, from 9 a.m. to noon for Train the Brain with Palm Health Foundation\, a special event at the Boynton Beach Arts and Cultural Center (125 East Ocean Avenue) designed to empower caregivers with practical\, science-based tips to support brain health and emotional well-being at home. Caregivers can bring their children and join in on a variety of activities\, including yoga to promote calm focus and body awareness\, art class to spark creativity and self-expression and a music circle to encourage connection\, joy and brain growth. For caregivers\, there will also be interactive sessions with research-backed strategies for nurturing emotional health\, guidance from experts on fostering brain health and tools you can start using the very same day.
