DESCRIPTION:History Fort Lauderdale\, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors\, will honor The Miller Family of Miller Construction Company during its 28th annual History Makers fundraiser set for Thursday\, February 6\, from 6 – 8 p.m. This yearly special event\, taking place at Galleria Fort Lauderdale (2414 East Sunrise Blvd.)\, recognizes individuals and companies who have made significant contributions to the growth of the City of Fort Lauderdale. \nFlorida natives Thomas J. Miller and Harley W. Miller established Miller Construction Company in 1973. Since then\, through a combination of determination\, commitment\, progressive foresight and creative planning\, Miller Construction has completed more than 600 impactful commercial projects for the private sector in Florida\, including office buildings\, industrial\, manufacturing & distribution hubs\, automotive\, retail\, healthcare\, higher education\, and hospitality that bolstered South Florida’s economic prosperity. Their impactful projects of note include the construction of Lago Mar Hotel & Club\, multiple projects for Holy Cross Hospital over three decades\, the design-build of Airbus Flight Simulator Training Facility\, KOS Pharmaceuticals manufacturing and testing facility\, and building two of the nation’s first fully digital TV facilities – WTVJ NBC 6 and WPLG Local10. In 1992\, they were a vital part of the rebirth of and revitalization of Las Olas Blvd with the construction of the award-wining 888 Las Olas Building and expansion of the historic Riverside Hotel and parking garage. A long-standing relationship with South Florida’s top-selling furniture retailer City Furniture led to working on retail showroom construction and renovations from South Miami through Vero Beach\, and in Naples and Fort Myers. In 2013\, Miller Construction completed Nova Southeastern University’s Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Ecosystems Research $200 million facility\, the nation’s only research facility dedicated to coral reef ecosystems. The following year\, the company completed the massive $50 million\, multiphase renovation of the world-class Broward Center for the Performing Arts\, a milestone for Fort Lauderdale’s cultural future. Recently\, Miller Construction completed an innovative\, six-level automated drystack F3 Marina in Fort Lauderdale’s 17th Street Causeway marine district for owner Founders 3. DESCRIPTION:Turtle Walks are a unique program that allows our visitors to learn about and observe the nesting and egg-laying process of loggerhead sea turtles. \nDuration\n\nApproximately 3 Hours\nThere’s no way to know the exact duration of the program from night to night\, although the program is officially scheduled from 9pm – 12am. The length of the program depends on when we spot a loggerhead sea turtle and her behavior. If we do spot one\, it could be at any point in the evening. If no turtle has been spotted by midnight\, the program concludes.\n\nAbout\nWith the approval of state issued permits\, experienced Loggerhead Marinelife Center scouts will patrol our designated section of Juno Beach searching for sea turtles while visitors enjoy an informative presentation on the plight of sea turtles and engage in a variety of hands-on learning experiences. Once a loggerhead sea turtle emerges and begins her egg-laying process\, the group is then led down to the beach to witness this unforgettable experience. \nWhat happens if I don’t see a sea turtle?\nWe cannot guarantee that a loggerhead sea turtle will carry out her nesting process on the evening of your scheduled program. Though we cannot offer refunds\, all ticket sales directly benefit Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s mission and the care of our sea turtle patients. \nWhat are my chances to see a turtle?\nThere is absolutely NO way to predict the successful nesting of a sea turtle on the night of your scheduled walk. Sea turtles never RSVP\, and we have no way of knowing what the likelihood of seeing a sea turtle will be from night to night. Juno Beach\, however\, is one of the densest nesting sites for loggerhead sea turtles in the world. \nHow does the program work?\nNesting is highest for loggerhead sea turtles in June and July. During these months\, we offer turtle walks to the public Tuesday-Saturday under a required permit issued by the state of Florida. Once registered for an evening\, visitors come to the center and receive a presentation\, at which time our scouts are on the beach in search of activity. If the scouts spot a loggerhead sea turtle carrying out her nesting process\, they will radio to bring the group down to watch. \nHow long is the program?\nThere’s no way to know the exact duration of the program from night to night\, although the program is officially scheduled from 9pm – 12am. The length of the program depends entirely on when and if we spot a sea turtle. If we do spot one\, it could be at any point in the evening. If no turtle has been spotted by midnight\, the program concludes. \nCan I bring a flashlight?\nSorry\, flashlights are not permitted. \nCan I take pictures?\nWe do not permit photography of any form throughout the program. \nMore Info\n\nChildren must be 10 years or older to attend the walks\, and all participants must be able to walk up to half a mile on the beach.\nDue to our State issued permit requirements\, we can only accommodate a small number of people per night and dates fill up quickly. There is no relationship between sea turtle nesting activity and the phase of the moon\, the weather\, or the tides. All scheduled Turtle Walk nights have the same odds of the group seeing a sea turtle nesting. There are no refunds on tickets if a sea turtle is not spotted.\n\nWhat to Wear\n\nDark clothing is preferred to minimize the impact on nesting sea turtles. Bug spray and comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.\nWhat if it’s raining? We run our program rain or shine and only stay off the beach in the event of lightning. During this waiting period\, guests will be onsite enjoying our presentation. We do not cancel the program due to inclement weather. If the forecast calls for rain\, we recommend guests wear raincoats or ponchos. No umbrellas please.

These classes are provided through a generous sponsorship by the AustinBlu Foundation\, a not-for-profit dedicated to raising awareness and promoting educational programs to improve boater safety. \nThere is no cost for this class\, however there is a deposit required to reserve a seat. Strauss’ Don Juan. Led by SFSO’s award-winning music director Sebrina María Alfonso and featuring soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra\, the concert will take place on Wednesday\, February 12\, at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. A pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason will take place 30 minutes before the show featuring in-depth conversation and insights about the work and composer. \nDon Juan is a swashbuckling escapade that both scandalized and delighted audiences with its eroticism and ultra-modern style when it premiered in 1889\, cementing Richard Strauss’ (1864-1949) fame as the genius of his generation\, making him a favorite among musical modernists. Meanwhile\, his Four Last Songs\, a SFSO premiere featuring soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra\, is a touchingly beautiful and serene masterpiece\, bidding farewell to an illustrious career. \nTop Prize Winner of the 2018 Gerda Lissner Foundation International Vocal Competition Wagner Division\, soprano Amy Shoremount-Obra has garnered major attention for her work on the operatic and concert stage. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2005 as a soloist in Brahms’ Requiem with The Juilliard Orchestra under the baton of the late James DePreist\, her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2014 as “First Lady” in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte\, singing all nine performances of the opera\, three of which were Sirius XM Satellite Broadcasts and David Geffen Hall in Lincoln Center debut as a soloist in Verdi’s Requiem with the National Chorale. In 2018\, she made her debut with the Orquesta Filarmónica del Estado de Chihuahua in Mexico in a solo concert of arias from Il Trovatore\, Nabucco\, Tannhäuser\, and Turandot. Ms. Shoremount-Obra made her European Operatic debut in 2004 as “Ifigenia” in Handel’s Oreste at the Spoleto Festival\, Italy. She has performed numerous operatic roles with a variety of operas and performance groups including Opera Grand Rapids\, The American Symphony Orchestra\, the LA Philharmonic\, Grand Harmonie in Princeton\, NJ\, Odyssey Opera of Boston\, Maryland Opera in Baltimore\, New York Philharmonic and more. A champion of new music\, Shoremount-Obra has premiered/collaborated with some of today’s most popular and notable composers including Tarik O’Regan\, Dan Visconti\, John Zorn\, and Paola Prestini. She is a 2004 New York Regional Winner and National Semi-Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She has also won numerous awards from other organizations\, including the Richard F. Gold Career Grant from the Shoshana Foundation and has since been supported with supplemental grants from the same foundation.
